STANLEY SPENCER

Sir Stanley Spencer was one of the greatest British figurative painters of the Twentieth Century. He was a painter of imaginative and religious subjects, of landscapes and occasional portraits. Much of his work depicts Biblical scenes, from miracles to crucifixion, happening not in the Holy Land but in the small Thames-side village where he was born and spent most of his life. Extremely personal works also respond to his private life.
