Witches Conversation by Alan Davie

Many of Davie's key work date from 1956-57.

In the present painting Davie not only displays his formidable mastery of paint, which is applied rapidly and fluidly, but also traces of human forms. these forms, although embedded in the image are highly sexualised and include suggestions of highly aroused figures.

Davie has written that for him 'what can be closer to the mystery of creation than the sexual act - the driving force of the universe - truly a LOSING OF THE SELF IN MYSTICAL UNION.'

Related paintings are held by the Tate Gallery in London and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
