Untitled (Paula Rego's Portuguese Dolls) by Michael Andrews

One of the leading painters of the so called School of London, along with Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Kitaj and Kossoff, Andrews was also an intimate of Victor Willing and Paula Rego.

In 1964 Mike and June Andrews went to stay in Portugal with Paula Rego and Victor WIlling.

As a leaving present they were given two Portugese folk dolls. Andrews kept these dolls in his studio and there are photographs of him posing with them and they also became the subject of this playful painting.
